I was delighted for Mike Tindall on Saturday as he led England from the front and they hammered Romania in the World Cup.
I have been good mates with Tinds for a while now and some of the stuff that has been written about him since that night at a bar in Queenstown has been a disgrace.
He is a robust character and he will treat stuff like that with contempt. There’s no chance of it distracting him from his job as England skipper.
The paper which ran the initial story made a mountain out of a molehill.
So Mike was supposed to have had his head in some “mystery blonde’s” boobs?
Well the mystery blonde was at his wedding – I know because I was there - and is best mates with him and his wife, Zara Phillips.
Anyone that knows Mike and Zara well, knows that they are like that with their mates. That’s just the way they are.
The paper didn’t print her name, because it would have soon been obvious that she was just a mate and they wouldn’t have had their ‘story’.
Unfortunately, that is what sells certain newspapers these days. Papers never want to report on good things because people don’t want to read it.
People like to read about scandal and sensationalism. We live in a culture where people like to see other people fail. That’s sad in my book.
As a result, it’s often a case of never letting the truth get in the way of a good story.
It’s just ridiculous what sections of the press have been doing to Mike.
It’s also been interesting to see some pundits say Tinds and the rest of the England team shouldn’t have even been in a bar drinking in the middle of the World Cup.
What a load of rubbish.
What’s wrong with going out for a few beers after a game? Players need to unwind. If you keep them locked up and not let them go out at all, they get cabin fever.
The World Cup could be eight weeks long for the England squad. You simply can’t keep players in their hotel for eight weeks without letting them go anywhere.
Martin Johnson trusts them and he knows just how important it is to let your hair down when the time is right to do so. He’s been in this situation with England and the British & Irish Lions and he is the best man qualified to know when it’s ok for his players to go and have a pint and laugh – not others.
