We found ourselves in the somewhat surreal surroundings of Lake Geneva for our pre-season trip.
What a place.
The views were amazing, the accommodation was out of this world and the pitch we practised on was like a snooker table and reminded me of the sort of pitches we played on in the Super 15s when I was with the Natal Sharks.
We were based at a Nyon Rugby Club, a place where one of Worcester’s backers Dave Allen is strongly connected.
It was a fantastic setting but there were some tough sessions in there too. We also spent one afternoon water-skiing on Lake Geneva.
That was hilarious. Alex Grove struggled. Kai Horstmann found it hard to balance and Marcel Garvey never got anywhere near the water.
We found time for some good meals and few beers too but at around £8 for a bottle of Corona, it was interesting to see how many people got mysteriously stuck to their seats when it was time to get the drinks in.
It was probably the best pre-season trip I have ever been on but it’s time to get down to the nitty gritty of our return to the Aviva Premiership this weekend.
Although we come up as the promoted side, I was looking around at the squad the other day and we have some real quality in there. There is no reason to think that we should be battling against relegation all season.
Kai Horstmann and Neil Best in the back row have been around for ages, Shaun Perry has done it all at scrum-half, Alex Grove and Dale Rasmussen are very experienced in midfield and Garvey and Miles Benjamin have some real gas on the wings.
Exeter came up last season without a huge amount of players with Premiership experience, whereas we have lots of that.
We have sat down as a group and set our own goals which we are keeping close to our chest. And while it would be naive to think we could challenge the top four, we would hope to be away from the relegation bun-fight too.
Having played at Leicester for so long, I know that winning becomes a habit and we spent plenty of time winning games in the Championship last season. Let’s hope that mindset continues, starting at home to Sale.
