The North of England needs at least two top-flight rugby clubs, and hopefully in the future there will be more than that.

A lot of top England players are Northerners and youngsters in the North need avenues to help them progress through the game, and right on to the top.

Myself and Rob Miller at Sale are both ex-Newcastle Falcons players, but we are not the only ones at Sale hoping the Falcons can beat relegation.

There’s a bit of an upward move at Kingston Park again hopefully, with a new owner and a new boss in Dean Richards coming in for next season.

Clearly two Northern teams in the Premiership does not add that much balance to the league overall, and it would be great to see that number stay the same and maybe even increase as time moves on.

Sale are moving ground to Salford next season, and that’s one of a number of reasons why there is a pretty positive feeling at the club now.

Another is the fact that things are quite settled, and we ought to move into next year with a fair amount of continuity.

No sports team can bring about success under the constraints of constant change.

The sheer volume of changes over the last few years at Sale has been well documented, but hopefully a period of stability is on its way now.

The majority of the current squad ought to be at the club next season, there have been a handful of excellent signings for next year and that allows players to feel settled, which is important.

A new rugby director will join in the summer and bring his own influence, but we have far more than just a solid base with which the new man will work.

There are no passengers in the squad, everyone pulls their weight, and that’s reflected in the fact most should be staying on next year.

Just look at Harlequins as a good example of what continuity can achieve: now they are top of the league, and the majority of their squad has been together for four or five years.

It would have been overly ambitious for us to target a top-four finish this year, in our first as a group.

But when it comes to next season, we will have had two pre-seasons together and everyone will have that little more understanding of how we fit together and how the team works.

We’re still on course for that Heineken Cup qualification, and hopefully next term we can challenge for the play-offs.
