Chiefs Getting National Recognition

Chiefs Getting National Recognition

When players get picked for national duty, they often say that their success is not just for them, it’s for the team.

Well, in the case of scrum-half Haydn Thomas and flanker Tom Johnson, I will say it for them.

I am delighted that both of them have been selected in the England squad* for the upcoming game against the Barbarians.

They are great lads and have been on superb form all season.

But I am also pleased that Exeter players are getting national recognition. It shows how far the club has come in the last two years. If we had finished a bit higher in the Aviva Premiership table, I am convinced that we might have had a few more players in the set up too.

Hopefully that trend will continue over the next few years.

Tom has caught the eye almost every game he has played in this season and Haydn has managed to keep hold of the No.9 shirt all season. That is some achievement when you look at the strength we have in that scrum-half department.

I think he has been one of the most consistent scrum-halves in the whole Premiership and I am really looking forward to seeing him in an England shirt.

It’s actually a shame that he is not on the tour to South Africa. For my money, he should have been picked over some players who have had their go and perhaps not made as much of an impact as they would have liked to.

I am a great believer in picking on form and Haydn certainly had that.

With the final game of the season out of the way and my end-of-season-party hangover finally confined to history, I think Leicester will win the competition.

Their boss Richard Cockerill has done an amazing job getting them from 11th position and up to another final and I can see them having too much experience on the big stage to let newcomers Harlequins beat them.
