In Living Rugby's final extract from Geordan Murphy's book he describes how the Irish Rugby Union and Leinster tried to entice him back to Ireland in the summer of 2001 - with little success.

""

In the summer of 2001, I had an opportunity to join Leinster.

Jim Glennon was in charge back then, and he phoned to see if I was interested in coming back to Ireland.

It would have been a central contract because I had a few international caps, so I would have to deal with the IRFU directly.

Leicester had already said: "Look, if you want to go home, we understand, but just give us some notice".

They tabled a new contract, more money but not that good a deal (I was on a salary of £24,000 when we won the first European Cup in 2001).

I told Jim about the Leicester offer and asked to see an IRFU offer. They refused to give me one until I publically expressed a desire to come home. How does that work? Surely I can't say I am coming home until you make me an offer?

I told Jim that if the Union were serious about me coming home, they must put an offer on the table. He asked me not to sign anything with Leicester until after the weekend. "I'll get you an offer by Monday."

He came back and told me that I had been graded as an Ireland A Team player, so a full international contract was not on the table. I wasn't interested - I just thought it was bad business.

Even now, my Irish team mates don't believe the rough figure I tell them I earn playing in England - they assume I am on twice that amount - and at that time, my Leicester salary was modest.

But even so, the Leinster offer was not enticing. I didn't know a whole lot about money contracts, but a young Irish guy playing well in England, having just played full-back on a European Cup-winning side - make him a decent offer.
