As has been widely reported, I’m going to be a Sale Sharks player for the 2013/14 Aviva Premiership season.
But that simple statement doesn’t begin to describe what an emotional and tough couple of months it’s been.
I’ve been a London Welsh player for over six years and – especially during our rollercoaster season in the Aviva Premiership – we’d developed a real “family feeling” amongst the squad.
I’ve recently got back from Michael Hills’s wedding in Spain along with a number of players and their wives and the camaraderie was incredible.
So, when Sale offered me the opportunity to keep playing at the top level, I must admit I was really torn.
I’d thoroughly enjoyed the season of top-level rugby and felt I could operate at that higher level and bring something to Sale’s squad.
Balanced against that was how passionate I feel about London Welsh and the desire to help the club come straight back up.
Ultimately, it came down to me challenging myself to prove that I wasn’t out of place at Premiership level and staying at that level as long as possible.
The Sharks strike me as another club that have that community feel about them and I’m really looking forward to helping them
perform next season.
I’ve been signed as a second row/back row and am looking forward to pre-season training. Fortunately, my injury has pretty m
uch cleared up so I may be able to ease myself into the torture sessions!
We’ve still got the flat down here so I’ll be crashing with Tom Arscott for a couple of weeks whilst we get things sorted out in London. Then my wife and I have got the fun of getting to know a new area and making a new set of friends.
An added bonus of joining the Sharks was that I’m a long-standing fan of Manchester Utd, so I’m looking forward to seeing a few more games at Old Trafford when our fixtures don’t clash.
Once you’ve been a dragon, it never really leaves you and I want to wish all at London Welsh the very best for next season in the Championship and a heartfelt thank you for the wonderful times I’ve had with the club. Hope to see you all back in the Premiership next year!
