'Narked off' at law makers

The Tigers scrum wasn't working as well as it had last season when they lost to Bath

We have taken our time to get used to the new scrum laws, if I am being honest.

I guess we were a bit ‘narked off’ that the law-makers should have messed around with a part of the game that we were actually very good at.

But we re-visited live scrummaging last week to try and iron out a few problems that we had - and it seemed to pay dividends at Exeter last weekend.

We really got an edge on them and won several penalties which helped us to a big 21-9 at a place where lots of teams lose.

The Leicester scrum functioned better against Exeter Chiefs after some live scrummaging practice.

That was the start of a spell of games that sees us play Exeter, Northampton, Ulster and Treviso so it was good to start with a win.

I think we are slowly starting to feel comfortable with the scrum laws. It was always going to take a while for them to bed-in at our place - and other clubs around the Premiership too.

The bottom line is, if you have quality players at your club – and we have an abundance of them in our pack – you are bound to get better at something you practice week in, week out. And we are three weeks in to what is basically learning a new skill.

With guys like Dan Cole, Tom Youngs and Logovi’I Mulipola in our front row, the more they play to the new laws, the better they will get.

We will need to be at our best this weekend all over the park when the Saints arrive at Welford for what is the biggest game in the season for some players and fans.

We love playing them. It really gets the juices flowing and we have had some good success over them lately too.

They have been getting talked up this season and they have a better team than they had last year with some new boys coming in.

Meanwhile, we’ll just plod on being Leicester!

It should be a cracker as always and Welford Road is sold out.

If the boys at Leicester can’t get up for games like this – they are at the wrong club!

Leicester Tigers play Northampton Saints in a replay of last season's premiership final this Saturday at Welford Road, KO 3.15pm. The game is being televised on BT Sport.
