A few friends have asked me since I hung up my boots and moved into full-time farming why I haven’t organised a testimonial-type dinner.
I have enjoyed a long spell at Leicester Tigers but not the 10 years necessary to warrant a proper testimonial.
I wasn’t really planning on doing anything but when someone suggested I did something a bit different like a big barn dance with some old-style food on the table, I thought it would be a bit of fun.
And that’s when the idea of the Big Barn Bash came about.
A few people in a big barn, in a field, eating good food that I have produced myself on the farm, having a laugh and a dance to some good music.
It will be informal and I am hoping a few old playing mates like Martin Johnson, Martin Corry, Ben Kay will be there, along with a few Tigers from the current generation like George Chuter and Toby Flood.
The music will come from local bands and they will be playing stuff that people know.
The tables will be big and long and the plan is for the food to be presented in large platters in the middle of the tables after having a couple of my animals butchered – a bit like a mediaeval feast!
There is going to be all sorts of other stuff on the night too like a bucking bronco, other games and a chance for a Q&A with some of my former team mates.
I hope to see you there. It should be a good laugh.
