Rare serious injury to top French ref

Everyone knows that injuries are part and parcel of the game of rugby.

But injuries to referees are rare and the extent of the damage picked up by Mathieu Raynal in the French Top 14 game between Montpellier and Racing Metro are unlikely to be seen again.

Raynal, who is one of the most highly-rated officials across The Channel, was close to a tackle and got knocked off his feet in the contact that was made.

He suffered a double leg break, broken collar bone and serious ankle damage.

Those of a squeamish disposition, should look away.

We wish him well.
