Trek to Newcastle for Bath in Aviva Premiership Campaign Opener

We go to Newcastle in our opener and while that is always a difficult task for any visiting side, I would rather be going there now than in January.

And we will go to Kingston Park without two of the guys who have made the most column inches during the off season.

Flanker Francois Louw (we call him ‘Flo’)came to Bath from South Africa, stayed for four days, did a couple of training sessions and then got picked for the Springboks’ 30-man World Cup squad.

Kiwi fly-half Stephen Donald still hasn’t arrived and is playing in New Zealand’s National Provincial Championships for a little while still before joining up with us.

Both men will bring quality to the squad and then there is the likes of rugby league convert Kyle Eastmond, former Sale man Carl Fearns and my old Leicester team mate Dan Hipkiss who will all bring some good skills to The Rec.

With them all arriving, we will be without a handful of guys who have left for the World Cup like Lewis Moody, Matt Banahan and Lee Mears.

That’s a blow to any side but we have spent all pre-season without them so it is not like we have not got used to the idea of them being away.

Some boys have put their hands up in pre-season and there are some pretty eager people in the Bath set-up ready to make their mark when we finally get going.
