It’s never as easy to predict games in Grand Finals because there are so many intangibles.
For Leicester, can they get up for yet another visit to HQ?
For Quins, will nerves get the better of them on the big stage?
As I have said before in the latter stages of this season, I have a lot of respect for Quins. They have been top of the table for so long when so many people expected to fall off their perch.
They play good rugby, will be nice and fresh having been to Abu Dhabi for some R&R and, if they get it right, they can genuinely beat anyone. You don’t beat Toulouse in the Heineken Cup with luck alone.
I don’t think nerves will be an issue for them. Too many of their guys have played international rugby before.
If they are to lift the title though, their pack has to step up another notch to match Leicester’s might up front. That is not to say that their front eight have not been doing extremely well this season, because they have. It’s just that they all have to play out of their skins to keep Leicester on their toes.
And Nick Evans has to boss it from the word ‘go’. He has been fairly quiet for them since coming back from injury in April and must take a grip on the game early on.
The smart money has to be on Leicester though for various reasons.
Not only have they been to Twickenham for the last eight seasons, which is a remarkable achievement, but they have also won their last 11 games in all competitions.
There are blokes with plenty of experience on the big stage and, crucially, they are the form team in the country. That counts for a lot in finals and winning has become a habit for them, even when the chips are down.
They will also know they can come from behind to beat Harlequins after overcoming a large meeting in their recent meeting at The Stoop. It’s another psychological notch on the post for Richard Cockerill’s side who also have the stronger bench.
So, much as most people would like to see a new name on the trophy, I don’t think it will be this year.
Tigers by five or six points. (BWin have Leicester +6pts / Harlequins -6pts.)
Chiefs v Bulls – One of a few really big games down south this weekend as the season run-in hots up.
Everyone knows the Bulls’ power but the Chiefs are on fire and I think they will win this one by eight points.
Sharks v Stormers – This is in Durban and is a must-win for the Sharks but the Stormers are too strong and I can see them winning this by six points.
Brumbies v Reds – The bookies have the Brumbies as favourites here and they are at home in Canberra but the Reds are absolutely desperate for a win here and can play their best rugby with the backs against the wall. This will double your money if it comes in and I am going the Reds by 4.
