Big win keeps us in fourth spot

Tom Varndell believes Wasps have much more confidence than last season

I have no doubt that, this time last year, we would have lost Sunday’s game with Gloucester.

Having the confidence to not only come from behind and win – but to win a close game too – is something we have developed as a group this season.

When you do it once, it breeds confidence and, when you are put in the same position again, you back yourselves to come through it.

Gloucester’s late comeback made it all a little bit too close for comfort for us but it was a big win and keeps us in fourth spot just three points off Leicester and six points off leaders Harlequins.

Going through what we went through last season has made the squad a tight unit and we are all delighted with where we are in the league. Especially because the vast majority of the squad who went through our flirt with relegation last season are still here.

There’s lots of rugby left to be played this season though and, more than ever in this season’s Aviva Premiership, if you start to relax and enjoy where you are, you will come a cropper in the very next game.

Every team has something to play for in the last seven games of the season and if we are not on our game for each one of those, we will lose.

One guy who will certainly make sure that we don’t get ahead of ourselves is lock forward Marco Wentzel.

He has been so consistent this season, it has been incredible to watch him go about his business and we were all pleased to hear that he has just signed a new contract to extend his stay here.

Marco is not only a great line-out leader, he is a good ball-carrier too and he really leads from the front.

He is an integral part of what we are trying to do here.

I have known Marco from my days at Leicester and, in my opinion, he is the best line-out forward in the Premiership for what he offers the team.

Marco really knows his stuff and has helped in the development of the likes of Joe Launchbury and James Cannon who have both come on in leaps and bounds this season.

He has been a real mentor to the young second-rowers here and he is the sort of guy that you simply don’t mess with.

I’m glad he is on my side!

Tom, to my mind you are streets ahead of the present incumbents for the wing positions in the England set up. You read the game well and although I sometimes feel you may get out of position in defence your other attributes still keep you ahead of them. I like the tone of your tweet. Drive on Wasps. The attitude is right so keep the mind straight and you will succeed in my view.
