Wasps team hauled over hot coals

We have been hauled over some seriously hot coals this week.

Our performance against Saracens was simply not good enough.

While the result made the game look close, in reality, we were completely outplayed and the scoreline didn’t really reflect how poor we were.

We went 13-0 ahead but after that we simply weren’t in the game and that has been a rarity this season.

Shane Howarth, our backs coach, told us all in no uncertain terms that we were not good enough and that people needed reminding that nobody’s place is safe in this team.

Sometimes, those sort of tickings off are needed and, on this occasion, we deserved it across the board. We need to pull our fingers out because the battle for a top six spot and Heineken Cup rugby is still very much on.

We know we are not far off where we want to be but we simply cannot afford to have weekends where we are defending for most of the match.

It has been a disappointing few weeks for us after a few defeats in the league but that competition goes on the back-burner this weekend for the small matter of the reigning Heineken Cup champions, Leinster in the Amlin Cup quarter-final.

Coupled with the excitement of that game and our rollocking from the coaching staff, there has been a real edge in training this week.

The guys have wanted to do their bit to get us back on track and take a personal pride in their performance.

If people have been dropping balls or making mistakes, they have received some stick from the rest of the squad. We are very focused.

Leinster are quality opposition and are bringing a strong team over with them so it should be a cracking game. Adams Park is pretty much sold out and these are nights that the club and its players want to bring back here.

The sort of big European nights that Wasps have been famous for over the years.

We are also fully aware that if we can win the Amlin Cup, it’s a direct route into the Heineken Cup next season and we feel that we equipped to do just that, if we can get past Leinster.

I will be very excited come kick-off and have been looking forward to this game for a long time. Judging by ticket sales and the reaction on social media, plenty of our fans feel the same way as me.

Wasps in warmer weather; poor results have been rare this year.
